Bell & Associates has been engaged to help our client find their next Controller. The Controller will lead and manage the company’s financial operations. This role requires a proactive leader who can oversee all aspects of financial reporting, compliance, cash flow management, and ERP integration across multiple entities. The Controller will supervise internal accounting staff and external processes while providing strategic financial analysis and ensuring effective execution of daily, monthly, and annual accounting tasks.
Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Oversight
- Lead the preparation of monthly financial reports: Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, KPI, Gain/Fade, WIP reports.
- Conduct monthly budget vs. actual variance analysis and support quarterly forecasting.
- Oversee the annual budgeting process.
- Monitor cash flow, LOC balances, and provide guidance on daily bank transfers.
Accounts Payable (AP) & Accounts Receivable (AR)
- Oversee check runs; manage positive pay uploads and approvals.
- Manage AP/AR escalations and monitor bi-weekly AR aging reports and collections.
- Review and approve invoices and credit card expenses related to overhead.
- Ensure timely AR invoice entry and reconciliation of credit card and fuel card transactions.
- Receive and post checks and wire payments; provide wire instructions when needed.
General Accounting & Month-End Close
- Supervise journal entries including prepaids, depreciation, bonuses, and reclassifications.
- Oversee month-end and year-end closing activities including 1099 processing and tax support.
- Reconcile bank and credit card accounts; manage bank transaction coding and matching.
ERP and System Integration
- Guide new project setup in Sage and Procore and ensure accurate SOV uploads and contract linking.
- Supervise ERP integration tasks across Sage, Procore, Stampli, and related platforms.
- Provide ongoing support and troubleshooting for Sage data integrity and reporting accuracy.
Payroll, Compliance & Tax
- Oversee payroll processing, bonuses, increases, and liability payments.
- Manage employer reimbursements and employee expense processing.
- Ensure compliance with tax requirements including new state registrations and year-end assistance.
Treasury & Credit Management
- Approve vendor credit applications; monitor Wex fuel account and Ramp card credit/spending.
- Order new/replacement cards and ensure monthly statement uploads.
- Advise on LOC usage and ensure timely fund transfers to meet obligations.
Operational Support
- Collaborate with project accounting staff to resolve reporting, payable, and ERP issues.
- Provide financial documentation and support for litigation, cost-plus invoicing, and audits.
- Assist with custom Sage report building and troubleshooting legacy/historical cost data.
Team Collaboration & Leadership
- Serve as a resource and trainer for staff on QuickBooks, Sage, Stampli, and Procore processes.
- Coordinate with team members to delegate tasks while maintaining final accountability.
- Support continuous improvement in accounting workflows and data accuracy.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
- 5+ years of experience as a Controller or senior accountant (construction industry preferred)
- Extensive experience with QuickBooks, Sage, and integrated ERP systems (Procore, Stampli)
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, WIP, and job cost accounting
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
- Proven leadership experience managing accounting staff and interdepartmental collaboration
