Bell & Associates has been engaged to help our client find their next Controller. The Controller will assist and guide the management of the family’s total financial picture. This is an ‘in office’ job five days per week. The candidate should have a broad understanding of general business and be knowledgeable on various entity types and investment classes. Additional duties will be providing comprehensive general ledger accounting, oversight of tax preparation, reporting investment performance, and support for accounting support for investment partnerships and multiple generations of the family.

The role will report directly to the CIO as well as the family and be responsible for administering all aspects of the accounting and finance functions. This is a “hands-on” position, but must also have the ability to effectively and efficiently manage outsourced service providers. Technology skills are a must. Strong general ledger accounting knowledge is ESSENTIAL.

Responsibilities:

  • Aid the family in the oversight and administration of key financial matters, including cash/treasury management functions, tax estimates, investment performance measurement, potential investment evaluation, insurance coverage and claims management, etc.
  • Maintain accurate accounting ledgers and prepare consolidated financial statements for all taxable entities and individuals
  • Help the family in the oversight and administration of key tax matters, including tax compliance (gift, Estate, FIT, payroll, Schedule H, etc.) for all key family members and their related taxable entities, and preparation of quarterly tax estimates and annual tax filings for family members, trusts, partnerships, and small businesses owned by family members. (Including 1099s and payroll tax filings for domestics)
  • Assist with record keeping, record retention, bank and investment account administration, cash flow forecasting, budgeting, bill paying and other essential recordkeeping services for all entities and family members
  • Responsible for the general ledger entries, month-end close, reconciliations, and presentation of the balance sheet and income statement results and analysis to the family for various entities and family members
  • Responsible for analyzing financial statements on a monthly basis and reporting on variances
  • Anticipate & plan for capital calls from outside investments & verify wire transfers
  • Maintain & manage liquidity schedule for illiquid investments (lock-ups, etc.)
  • Collect & disseminate tax & economic information to appropriate parties
  • Prepare performance reports per investment & per asset class v. benchmarks
  • Calculate LP capital account value & performance

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • CPA designation preferred, but not required
  • Strong understanding of portfolio theory considering risk and reward parameters, position sizing, etc.
  • Strong understanding of accounting theory
  • Intermediate level knowledge of all accounting functions and related internal controls
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Auditing skills, with the ability to research and reconcile difficult accounts
  • 5 years of high volume finance/accounting experience
  • Background working in wealth management/financial planning for taxable family clients a plus
  • Proficiency in technology is essential
  • Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Intermediate level knowledge of various small business general ledger packages
  • Quickbooks experience a plus
  • Excellent written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills with a customer service focus
