Controller – Real Estate

$130-160k plus bonus

Indianapolis – downtown office

Bell & Associates has been engaged to help our client find their next Controller. The Controller oversees the accounting activities, ensuring their proper execution along with internal controls. The controller is tasked with the implementation and oversight of appropriate financial controls to ensure compliance with accepted accounting processes and legal requirements. This position is also responsible for budgeting, financial data analysis, record-keeping, and financial reporting to senior managers. The controller assists the CFO in day to day cash planning and management across the companies. The controller participates in all aspects of financial management, inclusive of corporate accounting, budget and forecast preparation, internal regulation, and financial reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate financial reporting and accounting functions for multi-entity corporation.
  • Supervise and oversee the day-to-day activities of the accounting department.
  • Adhere to month-end closing schedule as well as timely monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
  • Responsible for the general ledger and bank reconciliation as well as review and supervision of accounts receivable and accounts payable and related staff.
  • Help establish and monitor internal controls.
  • Day-to-day oversight of banking operations and preparation of cash flow projections.
  • Prepare information and coordinate the completion of annual tax returns and any other tax reporting.
  • Oversight and assist in preparation of construction draws and billings.
  • Assist in the coordination and preparation of financial audits, examinations, reviews, etc., of the organization in conjunction with outside CPA firm.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with CFO and executive team.
  • Oversee and review any required third party reporting.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret real estate documents that affect reporting requirements and controls projects, including but not limited to project agreements, contracts, and leases.
  • Ability to assist other team members to perform due diligence on vendors and contractors.
  • Other duties or special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting
  • 3+ years’ experience working in a Control position.
  • Ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit, strong work ethic, and keen attention to detail.
  • Well organized with a driven personality that takes accountability for seeing work completed on time and to full completion.
  • Collaborative working style, excellent communication skills, as well as the ability to influence others and resolve problems in a positive manner.
  • Strong business acumen with in-depth working knowledge of all facets of the real estate and construction businesses.
  • Strong ability to effectively prioritize tasks and workload in a dynamic environment.
  • Must be able to receive coaching and work well with all levels of management and staff within the organization.
  • Must operate with a sense of urgency, driving for results.
  • Strong knowledge of Real Estate and Construction GAAP and related reporting metrics.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel, is required.
  • Proven successful experience in a progressive management and financial/accounting analysis experience in a managerial position.
  • Prior experience in construction and real estate development and property management
  • Strong knowledge of software such as Sage 300, ADP and Yardi.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of financial information.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Preferences

  • 5+ years’ experience in management.
  • CPA certification
  • Experience utilizing Procore
